Jersey City is one of the most diverse communities in the country.  Later this month, all are welcome to celebrate that diversity at a special walk.
On May 20, in Liberty State Park, the American Conference on Diversity is hosting the 12th Annual Diversity Stride Walk-A-Thon. Participants will get to walk along side the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of American diversity, while raising money to support The Youth Leadership Programs. These programs provide a range of youth education and peer leadership education programs for New Jersey high school and college students.

“Through carefully structured interactive workshops, small group discussions, and experiential learning activities, student delegates acquire the peer leadership, conflict resolution, and human relations skills necessary for success in a diverse world,” said Melissa Sandler, the director of events for the American Conference for Diversity.

Walkers from corporations, civic organizations, faith communities, sports teams, families and friends are welcome to participate.

“All are welcome to come and enjoy the entertainment, take the leisurely stroll, enjoy some food – and maybe even help raise a few dollars if possible!” said Sandler. Organizers expect about 500 participants and are looking to raise more than $100,000 at this year’s walk. To donate online visit : http://2012diversitystride.kintera.org .

The American Conference on Diversity is about valuing diversity, educating leaders, and promoting respect. They work to help the youth, and future leaders of today learn the importance of respect. They teach to look past the race, gender, socioeconomic status, and any other stereotype of people. ACD is also planning an event at Saint Peter’s College, a Diversity Issues in Higher Education Conference in November. It is a one -day conference that helps promote the message of the organization to communities. Students, educators, university/college administrators, and everyone else in the community are welcome.

“We are a campus that prides itself on its diversity,” said Scott Miller, Vice President for Administration of the Student Government Association. “Having The American Conference of Diversity at SPC sounds like it could be great for the school.”

“Over the years, the Diversity Stride has united thousands of people across the state and since its inception the Diversity Stride has raised three-quarters of a million dollars,” said Sandler. Anyone interested can register for the event until May 14.   This year the performances will include Chinese dance, a Bollywood style performance, and much more cultural entertainment.
