Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo? You may want to check out the handiwork
of Adam Paterson, tattoo artist and owner of Jersey City Tattoo, located on 253 Newark
Ave in Jersey City. I sat down with Adam, who opened the shop in 2007, to talk about
his work.
Adam got into tattooing because he loves what he does. He was a graphic designer for
a few years and then choose to pursue a career in tattoos.
The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means striking something
and the Tanitian word ‘tatau’ meaning to mark something. Tattoos are created by
inserting colored materials beneath the skin surface. Tattoos are permanent markings
and or drawings on your body that have some type of meaning to it.
I currently have six tattoos and all six tattoos have a meaning behind them. My fourth
tattoo which is located below my collar bone is a Chinese symbol that stands for ‘family’
and around the symbol are my brothers and sisters initials. I got this tattoo because I
love my family and I wanted something permanent to show that I care for my family. I
think tattoos are pretty cool, but I wouldn’t recommend it to people who aren’t
comfortable with the idea of having permanent ink on their bodies.
